About WSMDA Nationally Accredited Dental Assisting Program
The Dental Assistant Training Program is one of the leading programs offered at the Westchester School for Medical and Dental Assistants (WSMDA). Our program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful and certified dental assistants.
During the program, students will learn how to take patient records, prepare and sterilize instruments, assist in procedures, and provide patient education. Our program also covers dental anatomy, dental materials, infection control, dental radiology, and more. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the NELDA (National Entry Level Dental Assistant) exam, RHS (Radiation Health & Safety) exam, IC (Infection Control) exam, all provided by DANB (Dental Assistant National Board) and work in the industry.

Study Where You Can Become Certified
At Westchester School for Medical and Dental Assistants, we are committed to helping our students achieve their career goals. We are accredited by ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training) and licensed by NYSED (New York State Education Department). Graduates of the program can become a Nationally Certified Dental Assistants by taking the NELDA (National Entry Level Dental Assistant) exam. This is available through DANB (Dental Assisting National Board). Graduates are also eligible to take the RHS or the IC exam. Certification exams are not mandatory for graduation from Westchester School for Medical and Dental Assistants or for employment in New York State. Sitting for these exams is optional and on a voluntarily basis. For more information on these exams please contact our Placement Department or our Admissions Department.
Course Description
The Westchester School for Medical and Dental Assistants’ Dental Assistant Training Program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful dental assistants. The program consists of both classroom and clinical instruction. Students will learn about dental anatomy, dental materials, infection control, dental radiology, and more.

What does a clinical dental assistant do?
Clinical dental assistants work closely with dentists to provide patient care. They perform a variety of tasks, such as taking patient records, preparing and sterilizing instruments, assisting in procedures, and providing patient education.
How long will it take to become a clinical dental assistant?
The Westchester School for Medical and Dental Assistants’ Dental Assistant Training Program is designed to be completed in either 20 weeks for the day course or 38 weeks for the evening course.
What are the requirements to complete the dental assistant program?
To meet requirements for graduation, students must have a cumulative grade of no less than 70% (C), have attended at least 90% of class and practical hours for each program/course (after makeup), have completed all assignments, and have fulfilled all financial obligations to the school. For all programs students must also have completed 100% of scheduled externship hours.
Is there any practical training in the dental assistant program?
In addition to training in both theory and practice, the Westchester School for Medical and Dental Assistants program includes an internship to give you real-world experience before you start your official employment.
Where do clinical dental assistants work?
Clinical dental assistants typically work in a dentist’s office, though they may also work in a hospital, clinic or other healthcare facility.
Do you help students to find a job after graduation?
When you graduate, our Placement Office helps to refer you to possible employers at no additional charge. Our Placement manager is available any time during office hours to help you with the process of finding a job.
Dental Assistant Program Information
We offer an exciting 600-hour accredited dental assistant training program. 400 hours are completed in our school and 200 hours are completed in an actual dental facility (externship). Our externship is a good way to get valuable insights into work experience as a dental assistant. Our dental assistant training program includes classroom education, externship and job placement assistance for life with dental practices.
