Are You a Good Fit to Be a Pediatric Medical Assistant?
One of the best ways to get into the exciting and rewarding medical field is to attend medical assistant programs in NY. Medical assistants require far less training and certification than doctors or nurses, making it a much faster way to get your start in medicine.
One popular option is becoming a pediatric medical assistant. If you enjoy working with children, this could be a great option! Let uslook at what the job entails.
What Does a Pediatric Medical Assistant Do?
Like most other medical assistant roles, you willbe responsible for a lot of the routine day-to-day work in a pediatric clinic. On the patient side, you will be:
- Discussing the patient’s situation with their parents/guardians
- Recording current symptoms
- Taking the patient’s medical history
- Recording vitals such as height, weight, and blood pressure
For these roles, effective communication skills and a lot of empathy are a must. Both parents and children are likely to be nervous when visiting the doctor, and one of your most important roles will be keeping them calm. Obviously, being good with kids is important, as well as maintaining a demeanor that is both friendly and authoritative.
You may also be called on to assist in minor procedures, such as drawing blood, giving injections such as vaccinations, or collecting samples of various other bodily fluids.
In addition, you will be assisting in various administrative tasks. These include:
- Checking in patients
- Collecting insurance information and other critical paperwork
- Maintaining and organizing patients’ medical records
- Answering phones and scheduling appointments
- Answering questions as they arise
Finally, be aware that you may occasionally work with teens who arrive unaccompanied. They will need extra help with matters such as paperwork and are likely to be more inquisitive about the process as well. Maintaining a friendly attitude will help them have a better experience!
